In the remote Peruvian Altiplano, 14-year-old Segundo wants to follow in his father’s footsteps, and continue with the family tradition, by becoming a master at making retablos – intricate, finely-crafted, hand-made story boxes depicting religious scenes and important everyday events. However, he carries within him a heart-breaking secret that will force him to face the harsh reality of his homeland, a deeply conservative and religious environment, and to feel a connection with his father that runs deeper than he could ever have imagined.
Set against the impressive backdrop of the Peruvian Andes, this coming-of-age story masterfully explores the weight of heritage, the limits of love and the burdens of family expectations, as well as the complexity of accepting our parents as what they really are. Powerful, unusual and surprising, Retablo has received numerous prizes, including the Jury’s Special Mention and the Teddy Award at the 2018 Berlin Film Festival.
